This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi all.

I am close to leaving and have a month before i leave. But i am just wondering am I better off going bankrupt or just leaving? I have family back home in asia and they are sick of me being in this mess and want me back. I cannot go bankrupt on my osap but can go bank rupt on my other credit card bills and line of credit. I am still in good standing but once i am gone thats it the collection agency will be after me. However, to go bankrupt i would have to stay here for 6 month or so to get through this process with atrustee and I got no time!

I won;t come back to canada (maybe for visit at most) But unless i find a job that pays a killing i don't think i will be able to manage paying from back home. Anyways any thoughts on what should be the best path for me to take?

Another quick question...if you were leaving for good from canada what would you bring with you? as i dont want to go there and then swear to myself for not getting a certain thing from there.

Thanks for the help guys!!!

It depends on the situation.
Ask yourself are you able to pay your bills or at least something towards the bills and student loans?
If you are able to, then you should.
I filed for bankruptcy in 2002, because my income was low and my bills were way too high.
I was not able to pay even the minimum amount or even the interest, so this is the reason I chose to file.
It all depends on your personal situation.
Are you going to be able to survive on your income, and still try to pay some of the debt?
Each situation is different.
Best of luck to you.

My main problem is i am not only messed up financially but also tossed between emotions as i have family back home and i can't be in both countries at one time. So its either with my whole family or me alone here. Now me being over there with a 3rd world country will suck and i won;t make money in dollars so i will be even poorer relatively speaking but i will have family and thats what i feel matters more to me. I wish i could balance everything out but its not a matter of being in one country. I need some special sort of treatment as i am definately is a weird situation here.

I know how it feels to have family far away, I miss mine too and they are only a few hours away from me, I don't get to see them often though because I cannot afford the gas to drive there to see them.  With your situation don't do what people tell you to do, do what you think is best for you.  If family is the key to your happiness, then go home to them but remember your debt will not go away on its own.  If you think you'd have a better piece of mind paying off your loans  first then stay here and maybe have your family move here with you if possible.  The good thing is your family will always be there for you and support any decision you make, and they will love you no matter what you chose to do. You have to do what's right for you.

As for what to bring with you if you go, a Canadian flag of course

Best of luck.

Miss M. May I ask what on earth you would want to bring a Canadian flag for?

One of the many misconceptions Canadians have about their country is that they are universally loved. It's bullsh*t. Where people are able to distinguish us from Americans (and that's rare) we're thought of as Yank Lite. American wannabes. Just the same but more ineffectual.

Apart from that Canadians are distinguished by their arrogant assumption that they are better than everybody else to the extent that they swan around 3rd World countries in backpacking gear that costs the equivalent of a family's annual income, bragging about how great it is "back home, eh" and ensuring that everyone worships their maple leaf.

Just as we always delude ourselves when we live in the country that it's the best place in the world (believe me, it's not even close), we assume everyone else thinks so too. Actually, we're so self congratulatory that we make people ill.

I'll never set foot in that hell on earth again.

Yeah another funny thing, i went to withdraw whatever money i had and i was exploded with all the questions as if i was funding some demonic scheme or something. Man i can't even get my own money without people poking thier noses! So much for freedom.

by the way keep up the posts guys i am making all the little notes of stuff that you guys are telling me to take which were not in my mind. Sure i''ll take a flag with me to remind me of the good times i had and the accomplishments i acheived.
