This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

In the late 90s I went to college and applied for OSAP. I got my documents for both federal and provincial loans, then went into the bank to sign all the paperwork. I waited for my money to be deposited, but it never was. I called a few weeks later and they claimed my loan had since been denied. I ended up borrowing money from my sister to pay tuition and getting a job to make it through. Cut to now - over 10 years later - and I've received a call from a collection agency about repaying the money I never got. Has anyone else heard of this? How can I prove I never got the money - I don't have any old statements, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

First of all, if its from the '90's the loan would be Statute Barred.  Do not in anyway acknowledge the loan.

There have been many complaints about OSAP regarding this.  It may actually be an overpayment of a grant.  They recalculated peoples grants going back 10-15 years based on income tax records and re-assessed and sent the over payments straight to collections....  I believe they actually have no right to collect due to the statute barred limitations, but they are trying anyways.

Can you clarify... did the bank say your loans were denied, or did OSAP say your loans were denied?  Keep in mind that these loans would be stats barred.  Search our forum on collection of stats barred loans...for more info....
