This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I love this site... misery loves company!!

I attended school 1994- 1997.  I had one child while attended school and had another in the summer of 97.  The birth of my second child was the reason I did not continue with my education.  Because of an oversight at the school I was attending the module I missed (and had made plans to make up) was a prerequisite for the next module.  I couldn't take the next module and that meant that I ended up pushing my graduation date back by three months.  Student loans wouldn't grant me funding for the rest of the course.  I didn't have the money and dropped out.

So now I owe 25,000 in student loans, no degree and just turned 30.  I have stayed home with the kids and my husband is a long haul truck driver.  We never really managed to make ends meet and when my hubby was in an accident we lost everything in the bankruptcy.

A woman called me yesterday from some collection agency.  I was clear on which one... everytime I asked a question she'd just say "Weren't you listening"  or "We already covered that"  She's talking about federal liens and tagging my SIN.  I asked what my options were at this point and again I got the "weren't you listening"  response.  I have never been berated like that before.  I know that I haven't handled my debt in the best way. But I never had any way of paying it.  She told me I should be ashamed of myself and that I need to grow and be responsible.  And that I need to set the example for my children!!

I'm scared and unsure of what to do now.  I tentatively planned to return to school now that all my kids are in shcool so childcare isn't an issue.  But now I don't know what to do.  PLEASE if anyone can give me some advice I will be in your debt forever!!

hi don't let these people scare you. If you can afford to put some money on our account do it and if you can't don't worry about it. The first thing you do is to make sure you look after your self and your family and went that is all set and done send them a payment even if it is only 10 a month for they can't not refuse any kind of payment. They will try every trick in the book to scare you so that you will start to send them higher payments but don't let it, stick to your guns and tell them that is all you can send and if you can't send any tell them that to. I have a student loan that i can't pay and when they call i just tell them when i have more money coming in they will get some and until then i can't help them. keep reading post on this site for there is alot of usfull information.keep smiling and have a good day

If you are going to follow that advice, make sure that there is absolutely no avenues of execution against you. For instance, if it is a guaranteed CSL, make surwe that you substantiate your inability to pay on demand, and your financial hardship - if any.

as long as you are the one showing the intent to maintain uniformity with the debt, there would be absolutely no avenues of execution by using any legal system.
