This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

First I would like to say love your forum, there is alot of info here which is great. Ok so here is my problem in 1993 94 went to college got an ontario student loan for 5000 and a canada student loan for 5000. I have not paid a cent on these loans. The govt starting  taking my tax returns in  2003. I have good credit now 4 credit cards and a couple of small loans. I recently got a credit check from transunion and nothing was mentioned about student loans on them. I was wondering if my loan is stat barred. I ask this because just out of the blue about a month and a half ago i got a call from a collections agency saying that i owed 5000 in canada students loans. I asked her what date this was from and she could not tell me the date it was from and then i said well if it is older than 10 years good luck and i hung up on her. They have been calling my house about twice a week since and since the number comes up unknown name unknown number i let the answering machine get it and it's the same guy leaving a message on my machine to call him. I was wondering what I should do or should I just do nothing.

Thanks to all that reply

Also to add to this my loan was interest free for 18 months after that i was suppose to restart paying it which would put it into mid 1995 when the payments were suppose to begin.

Thanks

Why didnt you make payments? If you simply avoided paying your loans, please remember that this is not what this site is about. Please clarify why you didnt pay... hardship?

The reason I made no payments was because half way through my course my wife left me with 2 kids to provide for so i could no longer go to school as she was working when i was going to school so I had to get a job and pay for a sitter and only having a grade 10 education there were not that many high paying jobs that I could get with this sort of education I even had to get help from social assistance as i was barely making enough to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table

Hooger,

The only way to determine if a CSL is barred is to go in and investigate it. You cannot assume it is barred simply because you are being contacted to repay it.

If you want help, let me know. If you want to do it yourself, you need to have the right tools and knowledge to navigate you through the bureaucratic maze that stands in your way.
