This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Okay if you have no assets and no income and you are going to school from the good grace of family. What really are your options. One part of my loan is in interest relief while the other is in collections. How can I make things right with anyone financially under the circumstances. I guess I just feel like no options exist under current circumstances. Of course I want to pay my loan back but how. I will not be finished school for one more year. The I should start at 50,000 as that is the base salary for a teacher in alberta. Then I will begin paying but before that how can I get things in a positive state.

thanks for your time and I wish everyone the best

You pretty much answered your own question, you have no assets and you have no income, so you are not in any position to pay anything.
If you had income you could offer something, however, this is not the case.
My suggestion would be to contact the dept. where the loans are in collections and explain your situation.
You have said that you want to pay the loan, you are just not able to now, but in the next year you will have the money to pay them back.
I was in the same situation for many years.
Earning minimum wage, paying rent, utilities, bus fare and still trying to survive. I did not make one payment for student loans, as they would not accept my $ 25 payment, but at least I was trying. So in this time, which was about 6 years, I never paid anything.
Now, I am earning more money, but it is still hard trying to stay afloat since my b/f heart attack, but I am paying them $ 50.
The interest is $ 50.02 each month, but right now that is the best that I can do. I am really trying to pay more right now, but again, I am not able to.
This year I plan on paying more.

I have said to other posters, you can only do what you can. If you have no income, you can't pay.

I would just contact the collections and tell them your situation.

Good luck

like i said on another post, try and see if you can get the loan in collections recalled to your original lender.  start there.  plead your case, you may get results, you may not.  you may have to come up with a few payments, interest, fees/service charges etc before they can recall the loan and you can always resubmit your IR application.

unfortunately, there are not many options available to those of us who genuinely want to pay but cannot.  if you are still denied you can try appealing to governmnet bodies, directly to the folks at hte CSLP, etc.  the original lender is the best place to start, however, since they screwed your IR app in the first place.

good luck

$50,000 for a new teacher? Wow...it's only about $35,000 to $40,000 in Ontario, depending on your level of education...

Please don't panic...take care of yourself first...

Hi everyone, I am new on this post and I hope I can get some help...I have been out of college since '94 and although I did pay a large portion of the loan off, and have paperwork to prove it, I got a call from CSL about 2 years ago. After all the money I paid back, thought I was in the clear. A bomb dropped on me when the guy on the phone said "oh, that was your Ontario SL"; this is CSL...all I can say is that my heart skipped a few beats as my brain went into a tailspin about how to break the news to my husband. Well that never happened. He does'nt know to this day. I remember receiving only about 6K for the entire 4 semesters of my college program. Don't understand how, I could have paid off in one shot: $3800.00, and made payments until I couldn't afford it anymore due to some unforseen events which I will not mention now. The payments I made were over three years at 145.00 a month, and, when I quit paying because I couldn't anymore, the loan sharks left us alone for a couple of years. Then, they came calling again around 2 years ago, saying that I owed them another 2K. So I paid up the entire amount to CBL (or whatsernames) and got a letter releasing me from that debt. When I checked my Equifax credit report (online - paid 15.00) it did say thankfully, that it was settled. A few months later, in Jan '03, I was hit with this crap about CSL...so in the meantime, my husband and I purchased a home and my name is on it as well as his. My concerns are this. If there really was a loan repayment issue (and not an error as many have posted on this site), and I buy a house where I am plainly seen as part owner, how long would it take for the sharks to find out or would they? If they did, would they put a lein on the house if payment was not rendered immediately? How would the lein thing work, and would they not have to produce paperwork proving my default loan?? I dont' have any papers but the ones that I do have plainly read (and filled out with the loan officer) what I describe in this post along with my loan checks, and they certainly do not amount to anywhere near that amount! The one of the papers is for the Canada Loan and the other is for the Ontario loan...so I don't get it. I'm afraid to call or write or email...Can anyone help me?? I don't want to upset my husband if I can resolve this on my own. He also believes that this is ancient history... I appreciate any help from anyone!

Huner once wrote: "They refused my payment of $ 25 that I had offered them in 1999, so they got nothing.
Finally it is 2004, and I am making payments of $ 50 to HRDC for their portion of it".

Hunter! How did you manage your account has been transferred back to the creditor?

I was successful last year when the bank took my account back from CA. That time they admitted that it was done by error. Now my account with another CA. This time situation worth: a) there is no evidence in writing form the bank; b) I am not working. However, I would like and I think I can pay $40-50 monthly to the Bank.

I'm not sure who acually reads this but I was hoping
it could be directed to the appropriate person. I was
studying at an art school for
three years and also a private digital art school in
Burnaby. I have bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia
and my illness has become worse and I am unable to
finish school or live outside the care of friends and
family. I am not a mean, violent or an aggresssive
stereotype of being mentally ill. But I certainly
don't go through a regular day. I have been unable to
keep my employment and now I have alot of student dept
and consumer dept from trying to get ahead. I'm now at
a point where I have no means of even making minimum
payments on my credit card. I have no idea how to go
about these things and found your web board in hopes
of some answers. I would like to consolidate my
student debt(which I beleive is about 40,ooo) A 1000
debt on department store card and 7000 on a credit
card. I don't have anyway of even supporting myself at
the moment...I was hoping to get all my debt in one
place and at a lower amount and see what to do from
there...if that is still too much to handle I may have
to declare bankrupcy?.......I've no idea what to
expect..I'm homless..I just go to whoever will offer
me a bed(friends/family)..But I will have to find my
own place and apply for disability because of my
illness...What is going to happen now..Do the police
show up at your door and take away all your things once I am able to live
somewhere?

please let me know..who can I ask for help?

You can ask Johnny for help -- www.cfwgroup.ca. Visit the Advocates section of this site, and you'll find a ton of people who have been helped by Johnny's expertise with student loan nightmares.

The first step is to contact whoever holds your loans and advise them of your disability. There is a message forum here specifically for disabilities.

Unfortunately, even if you declare bankruptcy, your student loans are not included. So you need to find a way to deal with those...the sooner, the better.

What you are obsessing about is a debt. It's a loan. It's business. It's money. It contains no moral baggage. You are a decent, kind, loving and moral human being.

too_much...Please call Johnny. It may cost a bit, but in the long run, it won't cost as much as not calling him at all. He WILL empower you...

As I have friends who are bipolar, I have to say that I am so glad you reached out...It's so tempting to try and handle things yourself, especially since the meds seems to take away as much of your quality of life as they add...It is a BUGGER of a disease I wouldn't wish on anybody.

You are in a supportive community here, so please keep us in the loop?

too_much

have you tried applying for disability benefits ?  its a pain in the rear and takes forever but it will help get you on your feet and once you are in you can try to go about getting your loans forgiven.  please please check the disability claims help forum, or email me privately and i will try my best to help you sort through the mess ( i'm experiencing major health problems adn have been sifting through disability info for months so i might be able to help).  contacting johnny at cfw is also a good step - he is very knowledgeable in many many areas.

hang in there, you're in the right place for help.

Too much,

You need help and guidance. I think what you need to focus on right now is reducing the stress and worry associated with your debt. I believe it would be wise to contact those you owe money to or have someone acting on your behalf call them to advise of your situation. It may or may not do any good but at least you can feel better about laying it out in the open. Perhaps they can suspend payments temporarily until you find work. Your circumstances do not warrant a consolidation loan as you would not qualify based on your lack of income.

I'm glad you took the time for a long post to Too Much Watchdog. I can sense his anguish and didn't feel happy with my short reply. You filled in what he really needs to hear I think.
