This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

    Posted: 21/October/2004 at 3:11pm

When I found out that there was a lien on our taxes and that we weren't going to get our rightful refund or GST, I decided (actually my husband and I decided) not to file our taxes.  Because of this I haven't had a child tax credit, in fact in August they sent me a check based on what they presumed I should get and said that I would be re-adjusted once they received my taxes - but I didn't file them, so this morning I got a bill for the check that they gave me in August.  I am not paying it back - I don't care - it is rightfully ours.  I haven't had any income since March and with the state of my social insurance number I will not pursue an income at this time.  In the meanwhile, my husband was working (he started in May and was netting about $1200/month to support the family) according to the people we dealt with to try to have our lien removed, we hadn't proven undue hardship.  (They even accused him of lying and stated that according to their records I wasn't even living with him.  "But," my husband said, "How could that be, if you are able to contact her through both mail and telephone at the same place as I," but they insisted that I had a different address.  (Go figure, they were using an old address for the purpose of accusing my husband of lying, an address where BTW we both lived together, but they used mine and my husband's correct address and phone number to harrass me.)

Now my husband is getting laid off once again.  He finishes his last shift on Saturday.  My urgent question is: "Because we haven't filed our taxes, is this going to be a problem with filing for his employment insurance?"  I am also under the understanding that they can't take his EI check, is this accurate?  Accurate or not, I am still not receiving any CTC although this is also apparently protected from collection!

I have become so leery and weary that I am the one who keeps insisting that I will renounce my citizenship, but if you think about it I already have had my citizenship taken from me.  To clarify, once again, by renouncing my citizenship I am referring to the idea that I would willingly give up my rights (the few I have left) in order to be left alone / my identity wiped out, so to speak, and replaced with a status similar to that of a tree.  Or does a tree have more rights than I should expect?  I'm sorry for raving - I am genuinely at my wits end.

sounds like things are pretty lousy on your end of the computer.  sorry to hear your hubby is getting laid off - i dont know what i would do if mine lost his job.  here's hoping he finds a better job soon.

they cannot touch his EI.  they cannot touch your CTC.  sounds like you are getting screwed big time.  i would go ahead and file your taxes - you'll forfeit your refund and GST ( which you are essentially doing now by not filing) but you will get your CTC - which you are entitled to and which you may need.

as long as he gets his ROE i dont think it will be a problem for him to file for EI, providing he has enough hours to qualify.

as for the lein - though money is tight for you guys i would suggest you email johnny and see what he would charge you to get involved - he may be able to get the lein removed.  it wouldn't hurt to try.

hang in there and let us know if we can help

ive been going through some nasty stuff on my end and it helps knowing there are sympathetic ears here to listen.

professionals built the titanic but amateurs built the ark...

I would go ahead and file your taxes.
I work for a tax office during the tax season and they really frown against people who have liens on their refund, so they don't file.

What will end up happening is that in time, you will get a demand letter to file your taxes. This is not a nice letter. And it leaves a blackmark on your file at the local tax office.

I too have a lien on my taxes and refunds, the monies go to my student loan and that is fine with me, I want the money to go towards the loan, it will get paid off sooner.

And why deny yourself CTC benefits, they are yours and given your situation, I think you need the money now.

Good luck to you.
