This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.
The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.
Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.
I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.
Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.
Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.
Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Not sure where to start on this... I have been under extreme stress this
weekend; nausea, a feeling of being trapped, unable to sleep, unable to
think clearly, and... well... 'other' physical symptoms.
This won't come out clearly, so forgive me, but I need to do something...
Student Loan (from 2002) is in collection (NCO) and I had been making
regular *minimal* payments, out of each paycheck (every two weeks)
since August, and have not missed a payment. New Agent on my file
pressured me to agree to 3.5 times what i was paying -- on the Dec 20
AND 27th (even though I offered "two weeks til the second payment"...
she refused: "But that puts it into January!" [??] It had to be by Dec 31st.
This will handicap my ability to save to get my own place. Which I must
do! Mom, is 81, doesn't really have room, yet no one else will help out.
NCO Agent will call back beginning of January to talk about further
**stepping up** the payments THEN. Which I *had* meant to do after I
had secured a new place, hence be able to seek work on days off to
augment my other work -- she turns it to mean we'll be stepping up right
away.
If I pay the amount they're asking, I remain a burden on Mom, yet they do
not care. They think I'm free and clear there when I'm not.
I get 2 to 4 hours or so internet a day (as I don't have my own), so I hope
someone can respond.
I have more to say, but I have thrown out too much for an intro...
Christmas is a favorite time for going after the little guy.. your not alone here.
Reading through this site you would find that collection agencies use all kinds of tatics to try to get you to pay them more and more..
Pay only what you can afford without causing undue hardship.. You have the right to live, have a life without stress and worry. Even if you only send them $1 per month and can support your financial position, there is nothing they can do to you.. The collectors will keep calling, make threats and bothering you but there is nothing they can do.. If you can't pay, you can't pay.
It's Christmas... forget about this, don't let them cause you stress. Enjoy the season and take care of your health, that comes first!
In the new year take charge of the situation, don't let them scare and control you. Study the information on this site and learn your rights! Tell them what you can afford and what you will pay and stick to that.. Use the broken record method - keep repeating it to them until they hear what you say! Don't let them scare you with their threats, screaming, swearing etc.. You are dealing with a small minded person working on commission who is trying to make you pay more so they can get more..
Thanks for the response. I've been reading more here, there's certainly a
wealth of information.
To appease her, I said I would make the two online payments, (Dec 20th
and 27th), I can't go back on that. (That money would have bought the
first XMas gifts i have been able to afford in years. They won't get bought
now, because, of course, gifts for family are not legitimate expenses.)
Even though your response allayed the tension a bit, there is still
substantial concern, and I'm going to try to be a little more cogent in my
next post.
