This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi there,

I am new to this site and have felt extremely alone for the past few months and I reading these stories are extremely helpful. It is nice to hear I am not alone.

I have a couple of questions. First of all, I have been dealing with NORDON for the past year. My student loan has been in default for 4 years. It never should have been placed in collections as I had been making payments to the Royal bank. For some reason they still transferred it.  I have spoken with a trustee last evening to discuss my options as I am currently paying $250 on two federal loans and one provincial. I wasnt aware that once it is defaulted, it splits into three portions. Because this has happened, it looks as though I have been only paying $125 on each account monthly. They have informed me this is unacceptable and that  my husband and I can afford to pay $700 monthly. We are a family of 4 and simply cannot do so. We are average income earners. I dont know where else to turn.

They have contacted me threatening to prosecute me in criminal court as they claim I lied on a financial for. I indicated previously I spent $500 to $800 on clothing one month. I did that particular month because my husband needed work boots, kids snowsuits and various other necessaties we hadnt been able to afford for a long time.

I am trying to pay this off, the trustee informed me to remove my name from out joint account. I cant do this until next week. My question is, are they able to go into my bank account without a judgement and remove money? Or must I be notified first? I dont want to wake up tomorrow morning and be cleaned out. We cannot even obtain a mortgage because of this loan. I have an infant in daycare and work part time in order to be home for my children. I am terrified this could happen without my knowledge as my husband has to get $1500 dollars worth of dental work done next week. We need the money.

The federal government informed me that they can do whatever they want because they are the government. HELP!!
