This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hello everyone.

I am new here, and stumbled across this site while searching frantically over the net for information on how i can make my student loan "disappear".  I need some help and advice on what to do next after my interest relief runs out.  I took a 2 year college course 2000-2001 and currently owe roughly 15,000. I have been on interest relief since and have not been able to make any payments at all. Well...now i am told my interest relief is at the end..and they will not give me anymore. I am wondering if there is a way to have part or at least a good portion of this loan forgiven?  I was told i have no option except to start making payments otherwise it will go to collections.

Can someone PLEASE help me...what should i do next since i am still in no fnancial situation to make payments?

thanks so much.

debt reduction is next

There are rules for dr though:

Your loans must be in good standing
extended to 15 years
60 months total (54 ir and 6 grace) months since your last loan

All the info is here in this section or at aved.gov.bc.ca

But last year i got 22k knocked off my loans. This year they sent me a letter saying i might get 6800 knocked off if they approve it

So stay on the ball and prove to them that your in need for dr. You need pay stubs, or welfare, ei ....notice of assessment for the past year. If you had zero income you'll need to prove how you got by: a 3rd party letter, monthly statements from yourself for each of the last 12 months to say how you pay for rent and food, and a letter from yourself begging em to give it to you

What i said in my letter is:

1)circumstances have led me to be too poor to pay and that i have tried and tried(i documented 200 hours of paperwork and calls)
2)its in there best interest given the fact that i only made this amount for the past five years(I said it nicely though)
3)that it would alleviate my financial difficulties

Contact Johnny if you really need help he's the man
