This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi, please bear with me, im new here.

I got a student loan for $9000.00 cdn from Royal Bank in 1999. Half was a credit line, and half was a provincial student loan through RBC(manitoba). When I signed for the loan, the banker told me that the payments were to be 72.00 a month. When I received my first bill, the payment was 150.00 every 2 weeks! Not being able to afford this, I went to the bank and voiced my concern about an error being made in the repayment terms. I was told that there was no error, and that it was the amount I agreed to. I expressly remember agreeing to 72 a month, as I knew I would not be able to afford 300 a month!

Anyways, I gave up fighting the bank, did not pay the first payment or any other payment after that. I lived off the radar after that, and still try to. The funny thing is that RBC did not send any letters to any of my previous addresses, did not phone my relatives or employers, and did not contact me in any way, even when I had good jobs and an available address. I know my credit is probably shot, but have never tried to establish any after the RBC fiasco.

Anyways, I was wondering if there was a MB statute of limitations, and if so, when its up will I have credit again?

Also, a creditor found me over a 800 dollar rent payment that was not made when I lived with my friend, and both our names are on the agreement. This debt collector (Allied) says I am solely responsible for the full amount, even though my buddy's name is on the agreement too, and I moved out before he failed to pay that month's rent. This agency says that they will take me to court to get a garnishment order. Would this be a small claims court? Can they put locks on my cheap apartment? Can a bailiff take my TV? All of my stuff is registered in other people's names. Can they take the contents of my apartment, even if the stuff (technically) belongs to other people? Can they garnish my cheques if my boss doesnt allow it?

Thanks for all the help.

Yes they can take you to small claims court. Whether they will bother: (Allied has to send it back to) the former landlord who then must decide if it's worth it to go to small claims court, and then either pay someone or spend the time.  If you are renting the apartment then they can't do diddly about it.  They can register a judgement against you and get a garnishment put on your paycheque.  Typically for about 15 - 20%.  On EI?  not sure.  I do know that the only people to guarnish welfare is the FRO.

Your boss has to allow it or risk jail for contempt of court.  (Guarnishments come through the court system.  Just because somebody sends you a bill, it doesn't mean its valid or that you should pay it unless you made the order/used the service.  Unfortunately that means that you can be on the hook since you did sign the agreement and they can get it out of either party - all of it.  Be careful of what you sign!)

They have to sue you and win, then you can hold them off while you appeal (if you feel you have legal grounds), then they have to execute the judgement.  This all takes time and money, but if they have some experience suing they have an idea what the extra costs are and can add these to the claim in the suit.
