This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I had a student loan in 1989 but was never able to pay it.  Got married and was in an abusive marriage for 16 years...three children that I stayed home to care for because their father refused to help pay for daycare.  Since he never gave me anymore and kept us living in poverty, I had no choice but to leave it.  I just finally got through a divorce just afew short years ago and I need an education.  I have children to care for and I can't live on child support and child tax for much longer as they are almost grown.  I refuse to ask for welfare.....I have no education and no skills.  I have since entered another relationship and was surprized with a new baby last year.  He is has special needs, as he has life threatening allergies and is anaphylactic....I can't put him in a daycare to go to work....as his allergies are so extensive.  I am hoping to do my schooling online on my own.  As what I would really like to do would take a few years and he would I hope outgrow some of his allergies.  I want to work with children and families that face the same frustrations I am facing today with a special needs child and no place to find help and turn to.  It is very expensive and I can barely keep up with my bills each month.  I really have to do something and really soon!  Is there anything that you can tell me to do?  Thank you.

Ok, I have been reading up on the stats barred forum, and I am abit confused.  There are many stories.  I don't quite understand how it works, but I will keep reading.

I must add that I tried to return my student loan, soon after I had to drop out of my course...I didn't give the full story.  It was before I met my husband.  I had been living on my own and I had to have some surgery done.  I went to Social Services to ask for help with my rent as I was a student and unemployeed at that time.  The social worker told me that if I were to return my student loan, that they would not assist me, she said that I had to use it.  I had already given back the bursery that I had recieved.  I was pretty upset with her.  So when I couldn`t return to work or school after I became pregnant a few years later....I was for years harrassed by collectors and I told them each the same story....social services is who they should be dealing with, not me.  I knew it was going to end in disaster for me and it has.  I have 4 children now....I need to do something, I am 42....lol....my clock is ticking and soon it won`t be worth it for me to get going on anything before retirement age....and I won`t receive a pension as I have been a stay at home mom for all these years.  I don`t want to think of how my life will be like then.
So I will continue to read the stats...thank you.....
