This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hey Guys

I have a quick question. I just started paying back my student loan on January 31, 2010 (graduated June 2009), and I recently read about Repayment Assistance Plan. I honestly think it sounds good... but.. I'm hearing about some collection agency? My payment is $800 a month... between my federal and provincial student loan.. and I can make the monthly payments. But when I plug my income in... it drops my payments by $250 a month.. leaving me paying the principle and the government paying the interest. Even though I can make the payments.. obviously I would apply to have the government pay the interest if I can. My question is, will this leave me with bad credit? I had called the national student loan agency twice.. to get answers from 2 different reps.. and both times.. they said it wouldn't... but they said... "that's what we had heard". I don't know.. it seemed like a vague answer. And after reading this forum and something about "Tricura Canada"... I'm not even sure I should apply. Can anyone provide some incite into this matter? Thank you!!

Apply!  It's an Assistance program, that's all.  If you've defaulted on your loan then you wouldn't be eligible for any assistance.  Do not rely on answers from the dough heads at National Student Loan centre or you'll be run around in circles.  Bad credit comes from not making payments and defaulting on your loan and then collection agencies like Tricura start harassing you.  The RAP is set up to help you make affordable payments to prevent that from happening.  I have terrific credit - and I was on Interest Relief assistance (pre-RAP) for 5 yrs.  Go for it!

I'm in default, and they (Tricura or whatever) told me to send in the application anyway. What the heck? I did... but I don't get it.
