Hi
I have a BC Student Loan from about 6 years ago. It has recently defaulted and I'm now talking with the collections side of thing.  I have been told that I need to improve my credit so I can take out a loan to pay this debt(not an option nor would I qualify for one) or they may consider 6 months of payments at over 600/month if paying in full isn't an option and only to let things improve so I can get a loan to pay them.

Are those my only options with this? Are they even allowed to say that I should take out a loan to pay them?

I am employed and make decent money, but it is not cheap to live where I do and we have a pile of other bills that need to be dealt with as well. I currently have agreements with the Canada side of things and an old CIBC loan for small payments, but the women I spoke to didn't even mention payments except when I asked only to be told what they would expect for amounts (600-700).

Are you talking with Accounts Recovery Corporation on behalf of the BC Revenue Services?

I believe so, whoever deals with BCSL as soon as they default at any rate.

Revenue Services of BC is not normally thst aggressive. Sounds like a third-party agency collector.  In any event, your credit is what it is. Improving it does not entail taking out a loan. That is their motivational tool to hopefully scam you into going out and get one with a co signer.

If youa re unable to pay in full then there are provisions for msaking payments. If you want mediation or even intervention services you can contact Heather or me if you want someone to help you out with this.

The agency's purpose is to earn commission, first and foremost. They would argue this in every instance. If their interest was in you then they would simply set up a payment plan and away you go, right. Smile If their interest wss in the BC govenrment then they would allow the same privileges to borrowers and treat people respectfully. When a wolf sees a wounded rabbit bleeding in the snow what does it do? Easy prey - easy feast. Students and consumers who are wounded by debt distress and exhibit fears of the system are bleeding rabbits in the snow among wolves lurking all around.

The CFW Group rescues these rabbits and nurses them back to health. Metaphorically speaking. Big smile

Thanks Johnny, the number I have is for Rev Ser BC, at least when I google it that is what comes up.

I was told basically by the women I spoke to, that my options were take out a loan to pay them in full or pay them for six months HUGE payments and then take out a loan to pay them :/ . This was after I got a lecture on how I need to be improving my credit score with a credit card, loan , etc. They haven't mentioned garnishments but I'm sure that will be next. I'm not even certain it was legal for her to tell me to get a loan to pay them...

What kind of costs would I be looking at for mediation/intervention?

Are you looking for ongoing intervention and representation for the longer term or just a quick one to have this set up for you and then you manage on your own once established?

Right now, just intial setup. If things are not working out, I would consider longer term.
