Hope somebody can help me out with this. Looking to make things right but have a few questions.
I have been out of school since 2004. Due to the financial family limitations, I had taken out a student loan to help put myself through school.
Being naive and careless, I let the loan get into default and now my CRA Income Tax is being garnished each year to pay for the Canada Student Loan Debt I have. I am now in a better position financially and looking to make things right the quickest way possible to avoid future issues. I have a credit score that is improving as well as have a few credit cards in excellent standing and a car that is paid off and a mortgage for a new house.
Is there a process to get CRA to stop redirecting my income tax to my student loan debt? I want to know if there is a way to bring things up to speed to have them stop taking my tax return?
Being married, me and my wife will begin filing our taxes together this coming year. I know that when I get my tax return, CRA is taking that for student loan repayment purposes, however, will they take my wife's tax return as well? She works full time and has business and investments under her name and receives significant return on her income taxes and I need to know how it will affect her when it comes time to get our taxes done.
If they are taking my CRA return, I am fine with that, but I wish for her to not be affected
If anybody can help, that would be great.
