I need some advice. I graduated from university in 2009 and then from college in 2010. I have a student loan of about seventy thousand. While going to school I was a single parent and I always received large loans due to my need. I am now kicking myself. Here I am in 2013 with three kids and I work from home as a babysitter. I had to leave my job at law firm in 2011 as a legal assistant we could not afford the cost of child care for three children. In 2011 I had twins and it would have cost almost 2,000 a month for child care.

I have applied for RAP for several years and I did not have a problem until this year. In May my Common Law partner had a 3 pay period for the month of May. When I sent in my application for RAP my payment went from 0 to over 600 a month it was called a reduced affordable payment. I called the NSLSC and I told them I could not afford my payment and asked why it had gone up so much. I was told that from the last time I had applied that our income had doubled. I explained to them our situation of an extra income and that my income varies too from month to month. I was told I would be sent a Re-adjudication. I was to give them all of June’s income. I was told I would not need to make payments until the application was processed.

In July I sent them my application but then was told towards the end of July that I did the letter wrong  and I would need to do another and I would need to re-send in incomes from May, June, and July. I did so and faxed that off to them the last week of July.

Just last week I finally heard back from them after waiting a month in half. I was told when I first started this process it would take 4 business days. I was told that my payment was reduced down from 609 to 347. A lot more affordable this time around but the other problem I know owe for June, July and my payment for August. I paid May interest payment back at the end of July. (I was told to pay May’s interest payment so that they would process my application) So thankfully that was out of the way. I wish that someone would have said to me the many times I called to pay interest all of long because I would have.

I feel really frustrated at the moment. I was told I have 30 or 33 days at the most for me to pay the almost 700 that I owe for those two months. Plus I owe a payment for this month. Right now I am trying to get my daughter ready to go back to school and I feel pretty stressed out at the moment. I called and told them that I will try and pay them weekly and asked for direct payment to be taken off my account.

I am not sure what to do at the moment. I have credit cards and have never missed a payment. I have a good credit score but now I think that is about to change. I am pretty sure I am going to have a hard time coming up with that extra money in the next 30 day. Does anyone know what will happen to me? Should I go for credit counselling?  I was told that my RAP will run out in October and I am pretty sure if I can’t make my payments I will not be eligible. If anyone could give me advice I would be very grateful. Thank you for reading.

I forgot to add that I could write an appeal letter to HRDC that was my whole point of my post. Do does anyone think it is even worth it to do so. I was told my account had to be up to date and it is not at the moment. If they accept the appeal i could be refunded money that i pay to them. Only I wont be able to bring my account up to date in 30 days. Right now I feel stuck between a rock and hard place.

Are you dealing with Tricura on this, or the main level at Davis & Henderson's National Student Loan Service Center? Tricura is their internal in-house collection agency (who is not even licensed in some places for some strange reason).

If you can't meet the payment requirements they have then it will go into default.  Tricura and NSLSC only care about money remember.  What did you study and what was the outcome?

I studied business and have an honours in Political Science I did really well in school. I have been doing everything I can to pay back the money. I will go back to work when my twins go to school. They were diagnosed with autism and need to go for daily therapies returning to work at the moment would be a struggle.

How long do you anticipate being out of work? When you say "back to work" do you mean return to an exisiting position and career? If so, then how long have you been employed and what income range are you in? Also, if you are returning, is the employment related to or secured by the education you received?
