I graduated from university in 2009 and college in 2010. I have applied for RAP many times without a problem. Until May of this year. I filled out my application for RAP and included our income for the month of may and it was slightly higher because my Common Law Partner had an extra pay period that month. So, when i received my letter approval for RAP i had a "Reduced payment of 609" I called back in shock because up until now i have always has $0 payment. I was told on the phone that my payment increased by our income had doubled from January when I last applied. I said it was true but only for that one month due to an extra pay period. I told the agent I could not afford the monthly payment. I had to leave my job in 2012 after having twins. I babysit in the home to help out with bill and my common law partner works in an office of a trucking company. The agent told me that they would send me application for a re-adjudication ( it may be the wrong term) I would be required to send in our month of June income. The 3rd of July I sent them my information by fax and the next week I called to see if my information was received. I was told by agent that i had not been received. They asked what fax number I had used and I said the one they provided on the form. I was then told that I should use a different fax number one that goes directly to Repayment assistance. I was then told to fax the form to that number and call later that day to make sure it was received. I re-faxed my information and called later that day and I was told by a different agent that it would take a couple of days to tell me that information. So I called back the following Monday and I was told it was still not received. At this point I am starting to feel very confused and upset. I gave myself an hour and then called them back and when i called back the second time that day I was told that they did receive the application but not the supporting income that went with it. It was sent but for some reason it did not go through. I was then told that they could give me a fax number to send it to. At this point i said I would not be willing to fax them another document. I asked for their address and said i would Fed-Ex it to them. At this point my application is 2 weeks late. I called the other day and they did receive everything the 3rd time. I have never had such a problem faxing them my stuff i have done it for 2 year with no problems until now. I called yesterday and they still have not come to a decision on my re-ajudication. We simply can't afford over 600 a month right now. I know I need to re-pay my loan but right now it is too difficult being out of the workforce. I won't be returning to work for a few more years our twins were just diagnosed with Autism and will require daily therapy. Has anyone else gone through something similar?

The problem for a lot of people is that "household income" requirement.  A lot of people put their lives on halt because of this.  You take out a student loan and it is a relationship killer because the system requires "someone else" to pay your student loan.  Husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends alike have student loans of their own and if one party is required to pay their own, and someone elses it is a huge problem financially.

The reality is that a lot of student loan borrowers feel as though they are being held hostage by the system and the system is collecting a ransom from their spouses and significant others.  There is the "or else" result if one refuses.
