First of all, this is a volunteer site so no one would have seen your post till a few minutes ago when I got home from work and had time to moderate  the site... :)

To answer your question, at that time you likely would have had two loans - a federal portion and provincial.  ... and back then the loans were taken out through the banks.  If the bank did not sell your loan back to the government, then all records of your loans would stay with the bank.

Your provincial loan might have been sent back to the provincial govt.

You need to read up on the stats barred forum.  If you havent had any contact for over 6 years it might be statute barred.  Get your credit report from Equifax and/or transunion and see if its listed there.

Do not send anything in writing, otherwise it will be considered acknowledgement and you will lose any legal protection from being statute barred  and you'll be hounded by the collection agencies that will smell money and a commission.  While I find that wanting to pay this is honorable, the system isnt and they will hound you and possibly destroy your credit rating.  It may have already been completely written off by the government.

It may be better to leave sleeping dogs lie....   if you know what I mean, based on how this horrible system functions.

Equifax says I'm excellent. What does that mean in terms of old student loan?
