Hi there, I had a previous debt with a visa that purged from my bureau 6 years after the dol, which was in 2002, and now 4 years after being purged a collection agency is trying to contact me. My credit is now finally in a good standing and I have not made any mistakes since. I am trying get approved for a mortgage and am worried this could go back on my credit report. Can a collection agency re-post this on my report with equifax or transunion? do i have to keep dealing with the collectors calling me? from what i have gathered online, here, and with equifax is that once purged it can never be reposted? is this true? equifax states it could be reposted and if so, i would have to dispute it. Any help in dealing with this would be greatly appreciated. And thank you so far for all the information provided.

If the debt is staute barred it is not allowed to be reported.

equifax told me that collectors can re-post by changing the dol activity and then its up to me to call in and dispute it. meanwhile it affects my credit score until it is re-removed. this can continue, apparently, forever?

This is why it is important for those with collection items to stay on top of their reports. THe banks are also bound by a federal law as well. The question of accountability is often raised though because they never seem to get into trouble when they break it.
