I got a call from a collection agency today looking for money that they assure me is mine & outstanding from a student loan. I contacted HRDC about the loans and they assured me that I have no outstanding provincial or federal student loans.

This leaves the question of where is this loan from? Is it possibly a bank funded portion of the loan, and if so after hmm ... I'd guestimate at least 8 years ... is it stats barred? I have no idea what loan he's talking about, but I did have the wits to stop him in his rambling & questioning tracks and request that I be mailed a copy of all pertinent information before discussing the matter further.

I think that was the right thing to do?

The collection agency should have been able to tell you who their client is. I would have refused to talk to them until they identified who their client is. If they don't have that answer I'd get very suspect.

Regarding stat barred the term on debt to the federal government is six years.

If the debt is for provincial student loans then it depends on your province.

If the debt is non-governmental then it is governed by the legislation and again it would depend on your province. Most provinces have very short SOL periods so odds are if it is owed to a bank then it is almost certainly stat barred.

For now just force them to establish the debt. They have to do that and until they identify their client refuse to say anything.
