You had to know there would be a "but". I received a call from the National Student Loan Service Centre letting me know that I had been approved for the Repayment Assistance Plan (yay for me!), but then they told me that as the approval was for the period of August 1, 2009 to January 31, 2009, a payment was now due for August, as well as the upcoming payment for September 30. The only problem I have with this is that I had already made my August payment on August 26. However, when I log in to my account now, it states that the last payment made was on August 1, not August 26, although it does still state that the next payment due is September 30. I told the representative that I was talking to that I had already made my payment for August, but she stated that because that payment was made before the approval came through for the Repayment Assistance Plan, it could not be applied; that I would still have to make a payment for August, as well as the payment for September. Now the payment is not very high, and I can probably swing the extra payment, but wouldn't it be illegal for them to require me to pay an extra payment for August, even though my previous payment had been made in good faith? I disagreed with the representative, and requested to speak with a manager. She said a manager would call me back within 24 hours.
A point that might be of interest, when I called the number left on my voicemail to talk to this person, the call was initially answered by a recording thanking me for calling "Tricura Canada acting on behalf of the National Student Loans Service Centre." Now I know from reading I've done on this site in the past that Tricura Canada has been involved with student loan accounts that are in arrears. However, my account has never been in arrears. I've always made my payments on time. Is it possible that all of the new Repayment Assistance Plan is going to be run through Tricura Canada? If so, I don't think that bodes very well for how this new plan is going to work. And another thing that worries me is that in order to qualify for this plan, I had to supply my bank account information for pre-authorized payments. All along, I've been making my payments manually (in order to avoid the possibility of NSLSC taking a payment out in error, as I've known them to do to others). Now they have that information, what's to stop them from going into my account and taking the payment without my consent, even though I know that they shouldn't be allowed to do so. Worrisome.

OMG.....if Tricura is handling the new RAP, is that not a HUGE MEGA COLOSSAL conflict of interest??? I mean, in order to get the RAP in the first place you pretty much have to have a perfect payment record ergo your loans wouldn't be anywhere NEAR a collection agent, let alone having them call you to tell you you've been approved for amnesty....
Somebody clarify this for me, please, and explain why we should not all go to every media outlet in the country RIGHT NOW and call for an immediate investigation into the new RAP program?
