I am going to forward this same subject to the Canadian Federation of Students for their opinion.

I am not a lawyer, (Do you have any Lawyers available?) vhowever I have studied some law in achieving my graduate degrees, so will base my presumption on what little I know. It would be good to get a legal opinion on this matter.

Fact: I am Canadian (by birth)
Fact: I have only a Canadian passport
Fact: I live in the U.S.
Fact: Interest Relief Program is NOT available to Canadians who reside in the U.S.

Questions: Why does the government discriminate based on where I live.....my national origin remains the same, regardless of where I live.
Why are my rights as a Canadian made different because I live south of the border?

Scenario: As a Canadian who owes Student Loan Debt, and am unable to pay, if I resided in Canada I would be afforded the IR program.

As a Canadian, living abroad I am not.....afforded the same rights as any other Canadian. If I was taken hostage, while looking for work in some oil rich country (other than Alberta.... lol) and I owed Student loan debt, then would the Canadian government not intervene on my behalf based on my passport? Yes......

If I was to succeed in freeing myself, and getting a well paid job, does the Canadian government still want my payment? Of course they do......

I am Canadian regardless of where I live.........unless I apply for citizenship in some other country (in the U.S.) I would still be considered Canadian by virtue of dual citizenship. So in essence I cannot escape the fact (nor do I want to) that I am Canadian......and should be given all the rights and privileges thereunto.....

The Student Loan Program is so warped it is not funny........

"off topic" it would be great if they would:
1) allow consolidation of both my wife and my loans.
2) Stretch it out over more than the current 10-14 year life of loan.......
3) Accept any payment in good faith
4) Realize that we are in an major recessionary period and people need time.......
5) Most people are grateful for the loans, and do not want to run from them, but cannot afford to pay such high amounts at present due to above mentioned circumstances....

end of rant....
