Would anyone happen to know what qualifies as a permanent disability under the new RAP?  I haven't been able to find anything that elaborates on it.

In particular, I'm wondering if ADD (not to be confused with ADHD) would be included.

Madmaple, are you currently on CPP disability benefits for ADD?  If so, I need to ask you some questions privately.  I forget if this site has a direct message function.  I'll wait to see what your response is.

My spouse has been battling all the crap that comes with his undiagnosed and repeatedly misdiagnosed adult ADD (and subsequent mental illnesses that go along with it) that has messed up his social and employment reputation to the point that he has no sellable skills, no references and no experience.  I'm hoping to get him on CPP benefits (including the retraining and employer subsidies) until he completes his treatment that will take him a couple years and give him a second chance at life.

So as to not hijack this post for something unrelated to Student Loans (sorry Mark), his loans are stats barred by every definition of the Limitations Act in his province but I'm very interested if CRA will cut him a break on money owed or delay tax lien until he is functional and earning money.

takopup,

Sorry for the delay in responding....

No, I am not on CPP disability.  As I understand it, my ADD is mild as opposed to severe.  However, I believe it can be argued that a large part of my problem in regards to not being able to complete my studies was due to ADD.  It never hurts to at least explore any options to keep the collection vultures at bay, no matter how unlikely they may be.  My performance would fluctuate from great highs to great lows and I was considered to be an underachiever.  Once I was diagnosed and began taking medication, I was able to perform consistently and excel in some courses I have been able to take since then.  And it has certainly been good for my employment prospects and everyday life (by being able to focus, concentrate and be productive) ......... if I didn't have to deal with my current student loan debt I might have been able to complete my studies, even with the task of rasing a family and dealing with 1 child (of 3) who has an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I would like to add that your spouse is very fortunate to have someone such as you on his side.  Such support can make a world of difference ....... I know, because my wife has been there for me in the good times and the bad.

If there is anything you would like to discuss about the ADD issue feel free to contact me at madmaple AT live dot ca (of course, changing "AT" to "@" and "dot" to "." to make it a real email address).

There are basically no details about the new RAP program yet.  Its supposed to be implemented in the fall but no details even though people graduate from school next month!

Great program eh?
