I'm not sure which collection agency calls me, but my loans are with Scotia in BC. Up in the $35,000 range, or more. The messages they leave don't identify who they are with, just "head office" calling about an important personal matter.
In late 2007 I was having difficulty making my payments to Scotia and talked to them in early 2008 to find out what I could do about it. I was told to apply for another interest free period (or something like that) by submitting a letter to Scotia with all the details of my situation. I proceeded to start a letter and next thing I know, I'm receiving calls from a collection agency. I won't speak to them on the phone and have only answered 2 of their calls when they first started and when I moved to give them my new address, but they have never sent me a letter and call my cell phone 2 or 3 times a day via both automated messages and real people.
I don't want to deal with them again... Scotia sent my loans to collection years ago (in 2000 I believe) when I was originally in interest free period after my interest relief finished. I was doing everything I was supposed to, but the Scotia employee that had my file was away on medical leave and instead of giving my files and my repeated phone calls to another employee, her supervisor sent my loans to collection. It took MANY months of phone calls and letter writing to have them taken out of collection and the government portion of the federal loan stayed in collection and gets paid by Income Tax and GST refunds. (Approx $3600 now)
I've suffered mental/emotional anguish over these loans since graduation in 1999 and I know that ignoring them won't make it go away, but I'm not in a position to make any payments so I've been ignoring their calls.
Guess that means my response to this thread is misplaced since they don't get a chance to talk to me and they don't identify their company. However, it was ARC the last time Scotia sent my loans to collection and they were aggressive, threatening and made agreements about payments then refuse to abide by those agreements. I highly doubt this time around will be any different.
