Hi all,

Are there people here dealing with Accounts REcovery Corporation for Scotiabank student loans? If so, are any of you experiencing really aggressive and threatening collection calls?

I'm not sure which collection agency calls me, but my loans are with Scotia in BC. Up in the $35,000 range, or more. The messages they leave don't identify who they are with, just "head office" calling about an important personal matter.

In late 2007 I was having difficulty making my payments to Scotia and talked to them in early 2008 to find out what I could do about it. I was told to apply for another interest free period (or something like that)  by submitting a letter to Scotia with all the details of my situation. I proceeded to start a letter and next thing I know, I'm receiving calls from a collection agency. I won't speak to them on the phone and have only answered 2 of their calls when they first started and when I moved to give them my new address, but they have never sent me a letter and call my cell phone 2 or 3 times a day via both automated messages and real people.

I don't want to deal with them again... Scotia sent my loans to collection years ago (in 2000 I believe) when I was originally in interest free period after my interest relief finished. I was doing everything I was supposed to, but the Scotia employee that had my file was away on medical leave and instead of giving my files and my repeated phone calls to another employee, her supervisor sent my loans to collection. It took MANY months of phone calls and letter writing to have them taken out of collection and the government portion of the federal loan stayed in collection and gets paid by Income Tax and GST refunds. (Approx $3600 now)

I've suffered mental/emotional anguish over these loans since graduation in 1999 and I know that ignoring them won't make it go away, but I'm not in a position to make any payments so I've been ignoring their calls.

Guess that means my response to this thread is misplaced since they don't get a chance to talk to me and they don't identify their company. However, it was ARC the last time Scotia sent my loans to collection and they were aggressive, threatening and made agreements about payments then refuse to abide by those agreements. I highly doubt this time around will be any different.

Hi Johnny

They no longer leave messages, but when they were leaving them, the number changed frequently even when the message was from the same person or automated message. Nowadays the call display shows "Restricted" or "Unavailable", and quite awhile ago *619 too.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to retain logs or messages on my cell for long and their calls came in, and changed, so frequently that I stopped  keeping track. I have logged the toll free numbers I called back, but not sure which of these 4 numbers is correct, so here are just the last four digits of each phone number (to keep some privacy regarding the other numbers I needed to call). I gather you can deduce which belong to the collection agency with just that?

I'm afraid my record keeping with regards to my student loans reflects my mental/emotional attitude towards them. It wasn't always this way, but my depression became so deep because of my financial situation that I had to turn my back on dealing with the student loans, literally, to save myself. I also sought out professional help because of this and still see a psychiatrist regularly because I'm not willing to let myself hit that kind of emotional bottom again over money (or lack of it in this case), there are far to many other things in life that require what little energy I have!

I'm very grateful for this site, thanks again Mark! I rarely post, but read new posts daily and appreciate knowing that I'm not alone.
