Hi:

Long story short: I had a student loan from 1997 that I did default on but eventually paid of in 2000.  In the process of paying it off, I asked the creditor for reassurance that once I had paid them, that any and all student loan money owed would be done and that at no time in the future would I be bothered from creditors.  The creditor assured me of this?  I have a paid in full letter!
Now in 2005 and 2007 I have a credit collection company hounding me.  They claim I only paid the provincial portion(Ontario)?  I have been insistant that my debts had been paid in full which I firmly believe and hypothetically if not then that so called federal portion has not been paid on or acknowledged since 1997 and would now be passed the statute of limitations and now stats barred.

Now I would think the statue of limitations would apply here? yes? no?
Question: If I owed the fed portion why have they not taken my income tax yet? could they still even if it is stats barred?
finally to get rid of this once and for all should I pursue (with legal help) them to either leave me alone for good or take action?

I would appreciate any thoughts/comments/experience/
Ps.  I have talked to a credit counsellor and a legal assistant who both have dealt with many student loan woes and they have never hear of a case such as mine so I am really confused as to how to proceed?

The only other advice given to me was for me to wait 10 yrs to declare bankrupt?  I feel my debt has already been paid but may consider this to end the harassment?
