I have been reading your posts on disabilities and student loans. I haven't come across anything simuliar to my problem though. So anyone who can help I would really appreciate it.
Now I am not the person with the disablity, my son is however. I took out my student loans back in 1997. I wanted to go to school to get a better education to support my son and myself. ( i was on assistance at the time). My son started showing serious and harmful behaviours towards himself. I had to take off more and more time to take him to specialists and such. A few years ago I sent the collection agencies a letter from our doctor stating that I couldn't pay back the loans due to the fact that my son had  unforseen medical circumstances. We had no idea what was wrong with him until 2004, when he was FINALLY diagnosed. I can't work because of him. Also I now have two other children.  My loans are still in collections. Can I apply for a disability relief because of my son?
Again any help would really be appreciated.

i am pretty sure that you are unable to qualify for any type of debt reduction on your loans as you are not the person with the disability.  also, since your loans are older, the likelihood of the governemnt giving you any leeway as far as reducing your payments or helping you navigate the system to attempt to have your loans reduced or forgiven is unlikely.  now, depending what province you are in you might be able to gt some additional help.  i can't really give you much advice here, there aren't many details to go on.  you can try the template for disability relief/loan frogiveness ( i forget what i called it, but its under there somewhere), fill it out for your purposes and send it off - it won't hurt, it'll just cost postage.  be prepared for a form letter something along the lines of "when you entered into contract with us to provide funds for you to pursue your studies you agreed to repay your loans in full...tough rocks about your personal life you still owe us kabazillion and three dollars" or something along those lines.

wish i could be more helpful.

Thanks so much, but I have this feeling you are right. I will try it out anyway, like you said, it can't hurt. Anyway Thanks again!

It sounds like you need specialized legal advice.

Basically, you had family circumstances which thwarted your time/ability to succeed at school, which seems reasonable.

If your MP won't help, how about approaching the HRDC's Disability office?

Or federal gov't ombudsman?
