Would anyone like to state their opinion as to whether or not the government would purse a judegement against you based on how much you owe?  I only owe 8k... I would imagine they would rather go after the big fish.

Opinions?

The government can be compared as one of those fisherman who will keep anything they catch. They do not throw the small ones back. The small ones are good size pan-frys, while the big ones are great trophies.

Big fish, small fish, it doesn't matter. There is no preferential treatment.

I have witnessed cases whereas the Crown anchored a judgment a borrower who owed $1200.00.

The government will go the distance to recover money owed.

Much of the advice and things I've been told about what the Federal Government will do to collect student loans has turned out to be untrue.. The fact seems to be that there is not any set rules or regulations that the government follows.. They seem to just do what ever they want.. I also looks like a good way for the government to reward law firms that are good party supporters by having them go after most anyone to collect the loans, get judgments and what ever. Despite my not being able to pay, they have likely spent more on legal fees that what I owe them.. It makes no sense, definitely not a sound, intelligent way to manage student loan debts.

Here is what I can tell you from personal experience:

1) - They can't (don't) take money for your SA payments..
2) - The collectors keep calling after the crown has a judgment.
3) - If the judgment does not give them the results they want (full payment) they come back at you with more threats and demands for payment. Even having a lien on your property does not stop them from making further attempts to collect..

I'm beginning to thing that this h*ll will only end when you go to meet your maker..

Mom,

No, they cannot attach social assistance income sups or benefits of any kind. They cannot attach EI or Canada Pension either.

Collectors can contact anone who is assigned to them for collection - even if they are on social assistance.

Casey,

Like what, for instance?
