Wondering if anyone out there knows anything about my situation...  I have had a legal name change since I took out my student loans.  Said loans have since gone to collections.  The collections agency refuses to use my legal name, on the phone, via mail, etc., despite repeated requests on my part to do so.  I have inquired time and time again as to how I can make this happen, and have been given many different stories ranging from "it's impossible" to "you just have to make sure your name has been changed with the lending institution, and they'll pass it on to us".  Whatever the story I have tried to work with it - and still no name change.  This may seem inconsiquential, but I am a transgendered person and my birth name is pretty far removed from my current life.  For example, roommates, landlord, etc. only know me by my legal name.  Any info would be appreciated...

A name change on an account, especially a Crown or Provincial debt, must be done in writing.

Call HRSDC in Hull, Quebec, or The National Student Loan service Center. They will tell you how to do this witht he banks also (if yuou have any risk loans out there).

I have found from experience that collectors will use your former name just to upset you.

I started uni under my marriage name, then went back to my maiden name halfway through. It was changed at the NSLC. But after my loans defaulted, Collect Corp insisted on calling me by my married name -- with a sneer in the voice because they knew I didn't like it.

Finally, I wrote a letter saying that that wasn't my name and I wouldn't acknowledge any correspondence or calls addressed to that name. I guess the fear of no commission finally smartened them up...

Irritation, they will do whatever they can to upset you. Don't put up with it.

grrr...

I've had my name changed with the national student loan service center and my bank.  It really is JUST with the collections agency (NCO financial).  I'll try yet another letter and refuse acknowledgement, I guess.

My surname was changed at the NSLC and the CIBC, which was also my employer during my university years. And Mr. Demanshi (I think that was his name) at Collectcorp couldn't give a bleep.

Like every other piece of information they can get about you, they are using your former name as a "psychological tenderizing" tool, as Johnny likes to call it. They know that's not your name, and that's why they use it...because you don't want them to.

Obviously, we changed it for a reason, so what better way of insulting you than using it against you? It shows a lack of respect for the debtor, which is exactly what they want to demonstrate. You owe money, therefore you are low-life.

When you look at it objectively, it's almost comical the tools they think are effective at collecting money. And utterly illogical.

Good luck, irritation.

Since the name given isn't yours (anymore), tell them that that person doesn't live there / or / they have a wrong number!
