As one by one the banks stopped dealing with student loans, mine wound up divided between three places. CIBC, National Bank, and the Canada Student Loan Centre.  When I tried to consolodate they told me that it was not an option at that time because way too many other students were trying to do the same thing.  I had to fill out paperwork for all three.  Applied for interest releif.  All three gave me different information about how to file it and where to send it.  It got lost a couple times.  By the time the Canada Student Loan centre processed my interest releif, the time for which I required it was up, (it was backdated), and thus no use whatsoever to me.  The entire time I was trying to get this sorted out I was getting phone calls from the banks harrassing me to give them payments and each time I had to explain again that I was awaiting interest releif and had no money to give them.

CIBC told me that if I couldn't make student loan payments it would go to a collection agency and that I would not be allowed to leave Canada and my debt would be linked to my passport.  This was when I was three months overdue.

So I got the heck out of their before my loan went into the default that I knew it would and my entire life was destroyed.  I planned to travel and was and am in love with a man in another country.

The collection agency harrassed my parents and told my mother that they could catch me at the border if I ever tried to get back into Canada, and that I would be arrested.

I'm quite certain the second threat was a total lie.  Was the first threat a total lie as well?

Student debt is not a criminal matter, so, that rules out the "catch you at the border and arrest you" threat!!

"...not allowed to leave Canada and ...debt linked to passport" Not to my knowledge!

Some threats are pretty creative...wow...

I beleived the first one.  I didn't know any better. My plan was to move to a city and find a job that would allow me to make the payments and live.  That seemed less and less likely, especially since the interest relief plan just wasn't working.  I needed time to get my feet under me.  The paperwork was just taking too long to process.  And then when they implied that my plans to be with my boyfriend could be destroyed!  I couldn't get out of there fast enough!

They love to pull that emotional belt around the relationships closest to us don't they....I totally think you did what you needed to do at the time to protect yourself and the relationship you hold dear!  I empathize with you.

Thankyou. .  I'm the happiest I've been in years.  He's so wonderful.  Someday I'll have the money to pay it all back. I haven't given up on that. Until then.  I want to live my life.

"Life is waiting for you....it's all messed up, but we're alive." -Our Lady Peace, "Life".

Sums up everything perfectly, doncha think? ;)

I couldn't believe they told you that you wouldn't be able to leave the country.  Unbelievable.  They really will do anything, won't they?  I'm just now facing the evil loans after declaring bankruptcy in 2001 and I'm so glad I found this board...I've run across some of these tactics in the past, and it never even dawned on me that they do it specifically to 'socially shame you' into making payments.  My brother received an index card in the mail once--just a plain index card with lines on one side and blank on the other (like you would use in recipes)--and this is what it said (hand written):

Shawn;

I've been trying to get a hold of you for a while but you're a hard guy to find!

Call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX so we can hook up!

Stephanie (little heart over the i)

Luckily, my brother has a phenomenal memory and couldn't recall meeting a Stephanie anywhere....I googled the number and found it was one of the SL collection agencies.  Can you believe that? Handwritten, heart over the i and all, trying to make him think it's some chick he knows.  That's almost evil.

Can they get away with that?  Aren't they misrepresenting themselves? Or is the line so fine that there's really no way to tell what her intent was.....either way, that's pretty damned ballsy.

Travel all you like....hell, I hear they're hiring in Korea. ;)

Some collectors can be very convincing. They search for people who they can belittle and criticize.
And if you are not knowledgeable, like I was, then you fall victim to them, and in turn they prey upon you.
They make you feel like such an awful person. I have been there.

You have to empower yourself and know what they can and can't do. Otherwise, you will believe what they tell you. I did for so many years.

They told me that I would be kicked out of my property, that my vehicle would be repossed. I had one man tell me that you drive a so and so vehicle, when you wake up in the morning, it will not be in your driveway. And this is where I parked. They even knew my neighbors. They said that so and so say you are never home and that I should stay home more often and try to pay off my debt. No I was never home because I was working my butt off to just be able to eat everyday.

Because of this website, it has been the most helpful. And also of Johnny that no longer am I scared anymore.
I know my rights.
Yeah collectors I have rights too. You think that I don't but I do. And I know of them all.

And remember live your life.
Think of yourself and take care of yourself.

I received one of those too...From a "Michelle", albeit without the little heart over the "i"!! You'd think they'd have used a name like "Brad" or something

Mouse, they would never NOT let you back into the country...It would be kind of silly, really, since they want your money so badly!!
