Hello everyone! I am glad I found this site, there is so much valuable info here, but I hope that I don't need it..like how to handle collection agents and the like.
Here's my CSL debt story.
I attended college and university for a total of three years in BC from '98-01 and aquired a total prov. and fed. debt of about 18,000 , but I am really not sure how much the total really is, or how it is split between the two.
I became Ill with depression in 2000 and my grades faltered and I eventually stopped attending classes. The years from 2000 until the summer of 2004 are mired in a fog created by either my illness or by the medication I was on, or both, but I have a hard time remembering much about it. My spouse and I did move from BC for a year and a half and we did declare bancruptcy in 2002, which erased our debts which we had no hope of repaying in my condition and being unable to work for the forseeable future. I don't know if CSl, the bank, or the Govn't tried to contact me or not, I simply do not remember. I do remember getting something in the mail stating that monies that were owed were transferred to the Govn't, but I burned all my student loan stuff before moving from BC...I was in a terrible state due to my illness.
I have recently been feeling MUCH better and I am off of all meds and have just started working again..the first time in years. We are back in BC and I have no CSL or bank loan records at all..all burned. I called up the student loan service centre, I believe, and told them that I've been sick for some time and have no Idea who I owe or how much, but I want to deal with it now. They told me they have no info other than that the loan was returned to the government and gave me a number to call. The student loan centre asked for my new address and number, and I called the Fed. number they gave me and updated the same for them..but that was six weeks ago and I have heard nothing.
How can I deal with this without them just sending a collection agency after me? I would rather just deal with the Govn't on this, who by the way are keeping my income tax returns, however meagre they may have been.
Do I have any chance at keeping this from Collections?
Interested to hear your responses...
