Hi,

I am a Canadian who left Canada in October of 2000 and have not looked back. I live and teach the whole time in the UK. I have been paying back my student loan but have been supply teaching (subbing) and can hardly make ends meet. Can I be pursued if I am in the UK? Will they sell my debt to a UK collection agency? I know if I returned to Canada and did not pay off my UK credit card that they would sell my UK debt to a Canadian company, would CIBC do it for a Canadian debt in the UK? Can I apply for some kind of loan forgiveness or interest relief while I live in the UK? (I have perm residency status in the UK now). Finding it is taking forever to pay back my loan (Fed of 21,000 and Alberta of 7,000), interest is outrageous. What would happen at my parents house? They have some of my possesions and it is the address I use to have CIBC mail my stuff to in Canada, can they go into my parents house? Recently applied for interest only repayments and am shocked with the interest. If I had no job in Canada or a real sh*te one would my repayments be changed to compensate? I currently pay 324 a month for fed and 123 a month for alberta, interest only is 115 for fed and 42 for alberta, feel like I am being taken for a dolt, should I be charged this rate?

If you plan on staying in the UK and are ok with skipping on the debt, stop paying and go to ground.

in a few years the debts will be barred from collection by the limitation laws and that's the end of the story.

Up to you.

Residing in the UK will not stop HRDC and SDC from doing what is necessary to secure their best interest, Islander.

You are right in saying "Up to You". Yam will know one day if he made the right decision or not.

I'm not aware of what arrangements the undead have with the UK. I certainly defer to your expertise.

Equally, I never advocate skipping. That's always a personal choice and I make no moral judgments. Sometimes it's the only alternative, sometimes it's the best alternative, sometimes it's just cheesy.

Like I said. It's her (his) call).
