I've heard that if you're an employee of the fed or prov. govt, or teacher, etc. that there are going to be special programs to help with student debts.  That is, if you're employed in the public sector.

Does anybody know if this is true, and if so, what are the details?

It's very predictable.  Help those who help themselves.  It is the law of the jungle.

i know that in the past, employees of certain universities were allowed to enroll their children tuition free

i also know that there used to be internal 'bursaries, awards and scholarships' for employees children that were not posted in any college or university calendars.

i no longer have first hand knowledge of whether or not these things still exist, however, and please remember this is from when i was a student 5-10 years ago.  and no, i did not reap the benefits of any of this bullsh!t - my mom was on contract with hrdc and thus not a full time employee so not allowed any benefits whatsoever.  as for the university - my best friends' mom worked in the financial aid office and 'encouraged' him to attend where she worked for obvious reasons.

mark - is this what you are referring to ?

"in recognition of the increasing need for skilled medical profesionals in underserved communities, the Province of BC has implemented the loan forgiveness program for nurses, physicians, midwives and pharmacists"

reminds me of the show northern exposure...hope other provinces jump on board with this

I was wondering if Johnny had any further info on these initiatives?  Will it be restricted to the medical professions?  Are they going to open it up to a greater array of public service employees?

Thanks,

I think that what you are reffering to with med students is a very different creature. There is a program which I think is specific to Ontario where, because of a physician shortage, the Ont. government wiil practically pay you through med school, as long as you agree to work for two years in an underserviced area (e.g. deep north).  This has been around for about two years now, but has nothing to do with public employees or after- the -fact debt.  Nurses are not included in this - there is no shortage of qualified nurses.
