I graduated from college in '98. While atending I was, and still am, permanently disabled. I received phone calls from the BC Student Loan collections office asking me to submit the money I owed. At the time I had no idea there may be disability relief. My question is this, do I still owe the money to them. I no longer live in BC, or Canada even, for that matter. Also, I would like more info on Income tax debt and how it applies to the disabled. This is semi-OT but here goes anyway. In '91 there was an immenent lay-off threat from the place I worked at. I quit and took my company and severance package. At the time I quit I was permanently disabled. My income dropped quite a bit and I had to use the revenues I had to pay off debts. The following year I found out that I owed around 4K in income tax. Revenue Canada was informed MULTIPLE times that I was permanently disabled and that my circumstances would not change for the better, due to my disability. My question regarding Revenue Canada is, isn't there some form of stature of limitations or waiver for hardship/disabled persons? I feel it is perverted to hound a disabled person for money they can never repay.

Help?

I have heard that CCRA can be very flexible, or at least they have the power to be.  I'm after them to change a reassessment they did on me too.  They seem to be helpful but I'll have to wait and see.  I just keep bugging them to 'check in". I spoke to someone in collections because I'm on EI and the collection notes are rolling in and he was nice, he said he'll put a note on my file that reflects the situation.

remember, you can always call Johnny.

After reading Markevich v. Canada (C.A.) [2001] 3 F.C. 449 from a link posted in another thread - http://www.canadastudentdebt.ca/forum_posts.asp?TID=329&PN=1 &TPN=1 , I believe my tax debt wil be relieved.
