"John Hunkin, who presided over two years of turmoil at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, will retire from Canada's fifth-largest bank on Aug. 1.

He'll be replaced by Gerry McCaughey, CIBC's president and chief operating officer, who was widely expected to take over the top job.

Mr. Hunkin, 60, is leaving earlier than expected after 36 years with the bank — the last two of which were mired in turmoil. In May, CIBC took an additional $75-million charge to cover a potential settlement over its alleged role in the U.S. mutual-fund trading scandal — the latest in a punishing string of regulatory and legal provisions that total more than half a billion dollars since the end of 2003. "

Just maybe, just maybe, new management will consider rectifying all the damage done when they operated their student loan centre, lost faxes, lost forms, messed up payments, defaulted people, threw people out of school and owned Edulinx?
