This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Vickie,

In your case, you have to think strategically. Bankruptcy is not a strategy in any sense because either you are or not. The strategy is HOW to treat the financial problem - and be able to cope, if not solve it, WITHOUT bankruptcy.

The government is not going to see you as a bankrupt given what you have described. They would view your case and say that there is no way that you can say that you will never be able to pay it.

I know that you are DEFINITELY within the parameters of financial hardship. However, the government grades hardship much differently. If you are employable, or can be placed in a gainful employment market based on the education you recieved, then the discharge process is not going to work in your favor. Or, if you file an assignment into bankruptcy with the most of your debt being student loans, they will also reject it.

Advice: Don't spend $1500.00 or more on bankruptcy unless you know it is going to solve your problem. Don't bank on hopes that the government will lighten up on the discharge process.

If your financial hardship disables you from EVER paying the student loans, can demonstrate that you depend on the services of the government and/or community for survival for a prolonged period of time, and you are not able to be placed within a gainful or suitable employment market, then by all means, go bankrupt.

If you are not bankrupt, do not go bankrupt. If you do, then you are destroying your future financial and health and well-being.
