This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

So, I'm hoping that someone might have gone through a similar process in the past.  I filed a Proposal in March 2011 and will be paying it until March 2016.  In 2012 I decided to go back to school for a degree in Nursing.  I was able to manage it financially the first year but this year I decided to apply for OSAP.  I never went the OSAP route my first time at school (in fact, that was what started the ball of debt rolling 10 years ago).  Now I have obviously failed the credit check for OSAP.  Has anyone been successful with an appeal?  The crisis with my debt load really hit a head when my cousin went to rehab twice in the span of about 14 months.  It ain't cheap and turned into a family problem.  She was even living with us for a short while.  Stress causes stupid decisions and combined with trying to help her parents pay for two stints in rehab, ultimately I had to file.

I know that OSAP considers appeals based on exigent circumstances that were beyond your control.  Do you think I will have much luck?   I am going into the school to talk to financial aid next week but would like to go with my complete appeal package so if anyone knows what types of information are looked upon favourably, that would be great.  I will not be able to provide them with "proof" of my cousins illness, after her last relapse we aren't really speaking and her family paid the bills so I don't have any.   All I did was contribute and make very poor decisions.

I can however, provide my first year transcript showing a 3.5 CGPA and info on the nursing profession to show that with a full time job I would be looking at approximately $58,000 in income (ignoring the shift premiums, overtime and stat holidays worked).

I guess more than anything, I'm looking for general advice about the process if anyone has gone through it, whether positive or negative.

Thanks!
