This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hey all,

The Nova Scotia Limitation Act presents a fair amount of patent ambiguity. However, it is clear that there are no limitations thart bind the Province of Nova Scotia from recovering money owed.

What about interest? I had my original student loan in 2000, it was in amount of $5731 and over the years of income tax refund payments going toward my debt, I have paid back $7154.01 so far. Now they are telling me that I still have outstanding amount of approx $727. The last statement I received was May 2008 and still charging interest. Although most statements I received through 2005 incurred approx $25 in interest charges each month, I do have one statement from October 2004 where the 'establishments' (Social Development Canada) original amount shows $6081.85 and under interest, is charging me $430.96 for a new total of $6512.81. This just doesn't sound right to me. I thought once a debt goes to a collection agency, they no longer charge interest. I realize the debt has moved around but shouldn't the interest chrgs stop when 1st submitted with a collection agency?

To the contrary, interest money is what the student loan providers go for. THat is their huge return on their investment. As you can see in your case, your loan has been paid for once over - and almost a second time. They still want money. The system is corrupt and impervious to prosecution. Organized crime within our government system is becoming more of exposure these days. CRA audits on small businesses and the manner in which they dole out penalties and humungous interest on bogus numbers while the leaders of the auditory bodies within CRA infrstructure are given pay increases and promotions for doing it. The Canadian government is La Cosa Nostra. Most provincial governments learn from their master, in particular the Alberta, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec governments. I could show you absolute horror stories within the Nova scotia government - far beyond what you read in the newspaper.
