This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

hi guys

just found this site recently..

just to give a little background i was in 3rdparty collections aka collection agency.. for 3yrs.. i hated the job   ive been out of collections for about 2 yrs so i have some pretty good knowledge of how it works, i mostly did retail and about a year of student loans..

there is a big difference in both as i feel the student loan debts the customers or "debtors" have more rights..

to the starter of this thread im not as knowledgeable as johnny

but i can tell you that when i was doing student loans we were trained to always not accept payments and always go for PIF on first call and if we cant get nowhwere we have to send out a questionaire for you to fill out to "justify" the PPA payment plan arrangement.

basically it was all BS the collector will do there best to hassle you and make your source for income friends family or even tell you to get another loan...

anyways just to make this short they can not refused payment as long as its justified in there eyes.. so basically they wanna know your broke.

reading what you said that youre pregnant i would seriously try not to worry about this so much as stress is not good for pregnancy.

my advice to you is write them a letter stating you no longer want to communicate via phone and will do so only via mail.

fax them a copy of this letter attn to there general manager.

and fax one as well to the client(bank).

i hope this helped.

good luck

How ironic-----At least your mindset has changed...it doesn't appear by the "tone" of your post that you have been brain washed beyond repair by collector training.....

dude to be honest with you i was good at what i did and i didnt even tell people off or degrade them.. the guys that degrade and yell at people are losers there usually out of the job by 3 mos tops .

these guys would yell and scream and look around the collection floor thinking he is a big shot, only if you guys can see who youre talking to at the other end of the phone you guys would be laughing.

half of the people in collections are rejects. . god i hated that job!

i think i averaged like 5 sick days /mth its a very burnout job everybody hates the bill collector. but it was a job and i had to pay rent and bills and support my family. i still have friends in collections now and still talk to them and all the time there asking me do u know anyone hiring  trust me 80% of those people in there would rather be doing somthing else than calling people on the phone telling them to pay there bills

No offense X, but if you took 5 sick days per month while working for a collection agency, then they would argue that you were good at what you did.  The problem in that environment is that agency management treats colelctors like most colelctors treat the people they are collecting from. Don't take that as an insult. Take it as a compliment. You have courage.

hated the job, it was like every day youre being watched by your managers..

i dont know if you guys know this but everyday there is a target you have to meet, and theres a stupid board that you have to put up your #s so everyone on your team can see how youre day is going, and if you have goose eggs.. well

kind of sort of.. collectors have a feel of false security basicall they think there $hit dont stink, they think that most people that go in debt simply are in debt because they dont want to pay it, they just basically dont care about the person on the other end of the phone as they are not allowed to care!

when a person would tell me there story how they cant pay, usually somthing traumatic happens (lost job someone passed away etc) i had to put the phone away from my ear, i had to do that or else i wouldnt be able to do my job, can u imagine how many sad stories i heard?

ive had collectors call me before, it was awesome i tell them i used to be a collector even ask them what system there using, sometimes even walk them through there system(cubs) thats when i would know i have a nub in hand when they dont know there ways around there OS. fun times..

I hear ya--

Fun times is right   No better feeling than when you have the upper hand and you know the ropes

I always get a good laugh when my husband goes into a bank and tells the teller what to do...or shows the teller what to do--he was a personal banker

I don't know if anyone checks this topic anymore considering the last one posted was in January, but I just had to say that it took a lot of courage for you to come forward and admit what you used to do.  I also am very impressed with the people on this site, with all the stress, and frustration that everyone has gone through with CS's everyone just accepted you.  That is very admirable.
