This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi all,

There have been many people describing really awful experiences with CBV Collection Services employees (Calgary location) pertaining to the carriage and handling of CIBC student loans. CBV Collection Services has been assigned loans whereas the borrower has previously gone bankrupt. The collector(s) handling these CIBC accounts have been described as being very cynical towards previous bankrupts, and mistreat student loan borrowers in ways that are against the laws that govern their practice.

If anyone is dealing with CBV Collection Services Calgary office, and feels that they are being abused or mistreated in any way, please post your concerns here:

Hello, I have been contacted today by cbv collections in Calgary about a default student loan.  I had declared bankruptcy close to 10 years ago but my student loan was not included.  I was contacted a couple of times  between 2000 - 2004 about the studen loan, had it deferred a couple of times as I was not working.  Since then, I have heard nothing from anyone, and wrongly assumed the loan had gone through a statute of limitations or something and just "disappeared"
When I was contacted today, I was informed the loan was for over 8,000.00 (original loan was under 5,000.00) which I found to be outrageous, and they expected me to pay this immediately. I told him there was no way I had that kind of money, but was willing to pay 200.00/month.  He refused to accept any payment arrangements, and recommended my only recourse was to claim bankruptcy again.
I do NOT wish to claim bankruptcy again!  I am in my 50s, single, and just starting to get a good credit rating.  I work full time, and live check to check, but can afford to pay 200.00/month with a little hardship.
He left me with his phone number and he's giving me 7 days to "make some phone calls" and get another bankruptcy started, (which I am not going to do!) and I'm supposed to contact him back.

I'm not sure where to proceed from here.  I don't have any documents or records (this loan was taken out in 1996!)
What if the loan is now at the end of the statute of limitations, what should I do?
If I do have to repay, what can I do if they refuse my offer of monthly payments, I definitely do not want to claim bankruptcy again, and can't afford a lump sum.

Who should I contact for help on this?  I'm tempted to ask my bank to increase my current loan with them by 8,000.00, but I'm pretty sure they will deny me, also I realy don't feel I owe that much!

What are your fees for your services?

Don't make a payment or do anything until you get the paperwork from the agency.

The very first thing you should know is if this is Federal or Provincial student loan portion?

Request the balance breakdown for the entire loan history from them.

Don't go rushing to do what they say just because they want a payment or the whole balance, you need them to supply details first.

Then contact someone like John who will make them stop calling and harassing you.
