This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Canadian girl...it is my understanding that most court actions for crown loans are wage attachments, court expenses...maybe assets that are liquidatible (probably not the right word ).

I don't know how they would justify taking away the roof over your head--a certain amount must be allowed for "living".

ok that is good if it is true. Were we live we could either pay rent or pay them the same amount to buy it a month so we would rather be buying then renting. But do not want it taken a way because of the loan. Heck it would work in there favouir after we buy it in 5 years then we would just have lot rent which is over 100 cheeper so I could apply it to my loan.

Is there anyone you know who could give you legal advice regarding this??  Who may be familiar with student loans??

I would try to seek out a more definitive answer before making a decision on this one

I can tell you that the Crown will not execute against real property in most - if not all cases. The standard methodology is to attach wages or a bank account holdings (depending on the situation).

They may place a lien on it if they acquire a judgment. That doesn;t mean anything unless you try to sell the property. This will guarantee that they get paid - otherwise, you cannot sell.

As long as you cna pay something, and act in good faith, you won;t have to worry about that.

If you buy a mobile home on rented land in the trailer park you likely have less to worry about than if you buy a mobile home or house with the land where a title is registered..  From my personal experience.. after they got a judgment against me, a lien was quickly put against my property. It all happened so fast, I didn't really know it was happening. It was like they had it all planed out in advance. They knew I had no wages or bank account to attach so they went after the only thing I have of any value, my little shack. It's not worth much at all.  Places are real cheap around here. For what this place is worth, I couldn't buy a phone booth in a big city! That still didn't stop them..

When you have property registered at land titles, it is very easy for them to do a search and slap a lien against what you own.. It is not as easy to find out about other property, it would take more work to find it. Anyway, as Johnny said, the lien doesn't affect anything (so far anyway) as long as you don't want to sell the place.. It doesn't even stop them calling asking for money..

It would sure make for bad press if the government was to through us out of basic house or mobile home.. If they try I will put up a good fight, You'll hear all about it! This would make for a good item for W5 or one of the other TV news programs!

Thanks for your help I was just wondering. See because we are not married and if we split he would get the home because if it was only in his name so I want it in both but do not want to loose it to student loans.
