This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I know there is supposed to be a way to declare bankruptcy yourself.  I just cannot find any information for Canada (BC) if anyone can point me in the right direction...

If you want to know why, here is the details.
I owe $41k student loan and $14k credit card debt.

it has been over 8 years since my last day as a student.

I am currently a single mother on disability assistance, therefore it brings up alot of issues.   Trustees don't want to help me 1) because I am not forced to pay anything due to my income.  2) I am assuming they also know I can't afford to pay them much because the $200 per month is a large part of my income... so, why would they want to help me.

The problem with just sitting like this is.. I feel helpless and that I really shouldn't work on becomming better... when student loans wants $1100 per month and the credit card company also wants a slice, how can I afford to get better... I can't possibly make enough money to survive, I need to get rid of this debt first.

To be honest with my issues there are some jobs I could look into, but, none of them will ever pay much.  I would be lucky to get something paying $10 per hour, and I would require a job that allows me to take alot of sick days... like a temporary company.  But unless I can get rid of this debt.. I can't afford to be self sufficient.. So since the trustees can't/won't help me I need to figure out how to do this myself.

Bankruptcy in Canada can only be administered by a trustee or in that business arena, or a judge.
Solve Student Debt specializes in solutions for students and graduates in student loan default, and those at risk of defaulting.
