This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Some strange man called my house a while ago and I check their phone number on the web and it referred to collectcorp. Anyhow they called me a number of times and said I had a debt to a visa card. I had almost paid this debt (about $1000 more left) last year but quit my part-time job, fell ill and basically gave up on paying my monthly fees as I didn't have any income (I basically sold some stuff to meet my minimum monthly for awhile but it didn't work in the end, as the interest was killing me).

So basically collectcorp is demanding the payment in full. I told them that was not possible basically because I have no job, no income, and am a student. But they didn't negotiate at all. So I told them that it wasn't them that decided how much I would be paying. They were very rude on the phone and because there were so many bad rumors on the website about them (and their website being hidden) I didn't want to talk to them anymore so I hung up. So basically I am thinking of telling them the next time they call that I will pay the debt someday but not to them but directly to the bank instead as collectcorp has a bad reputation and do not want to deal with them at all. Also since I live with my family, will like to tell them not to call anymore and write me instead as it constitues as harrasment to other parties. Since my debt is small, I am pretty sure they wouldn't sue me as the legal costs would be higher.

Can anyone give me some good advice? Does the above sound ok? Was also wondering why they would call me a year later, I had totally forgotten about this visa stuff.

Ummm
Some of your ideas could work, but they will not let this go and it could ding up your credit pretty badly. You can certianly try to get them to contact you only in writing and it might work. Another option is to pay them say, ten dollars a month, anything that you can afford to show good will towards the debt. They will go under and resurface every once in a while but they are most likely to resurface during times when you have money and insist that you pay(ie new job ect...)Anyway it will not be stats barred for another five years and they are within their rights to ask for payment at any point during that time, and of course interest is accruing and by the end of it your debt will be higher.
Good Luck
