This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi There,

I have a student loan of 7000 about 2 years ago CBV contacted me and we made arrangements for me to pay 60.00 for 6 months and then at the end of the six months I would try to pay more.  Here's the problem I sent them 6 post dated checks and the following week they called me and verbally attacked me I was in tears by the time I got off the phone they said that they don't have 9 years to have me pay this off and they want the full amount and they actually sent me back the checks.  Well my husband and I had to file bankruptcy about five years ago because he had been off on disabilty for a back injury but has since returned to work and we are trying to rebuild our life again.  My question is where do you go from here when you want to pay it back but they won't take your money.  They have started calling me about eight times a day and I just let the machine answer it because they won't make any arrangements with me so I don't know what we have to discuss.

Please Help!  Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to end up in court.

Vannie

Van,

Advice is not going to solve your predicament, unfortunately. I can tell you how to go about dealing with this, which would take a long time. At the end of the day, the lending institution and third-party recovery group is simply going to overcome any objection you raise and impose more fear and pressure.

We can solve this problem for you if you would like. It requires intervention and this is part of what we do for people suffering from problems as you have described. If you are interested, let us know.
