This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I want to call a collection agency but I don't want them to know where I work. I don't see how its illegal of me to NOT tell them.

Can anyone tell me  if it really is?

I can say from experience that not telling them where you work pisses them off a great deal. It's sorta fun actually, just like calling them from a payphone and not telling them your real number.

If you're making payments of 3% or more each month, you can skip the financial sheets, thereby avoiding telling them where you work. If your financial situation allows this, I say go for it. If not, you are stuck telling them where you work.

Hmmm how bout 2% haha.. damn I owe them about 25000. Don't think I can be paying them $750.00 a month.

When the loan goes to collections is it still 8.5% interest rateor is it more or less?

Do you owe $25000 in total or $25000 plus interest? That might change the amount you'd have to pay to make it 3%. The 3% payment thing refers to loan principal only, not any interest that has accumulated since you began paying.

The interest rate does not change once your loan goes to collection. The agency's job is only to collect the money you owe, not to change things like interest rates.

Brut,

Maintaining your privacy is not against the law. If you feel that giving this information is going to create problems for yourself, then privacy is your protection.

Just write a letter and advise that you have decided to keep your employment details private for security purposes.

Stupid question on my part but...

Can't collection agencies find out where you work?
