This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Here's the story:
Graduated in 1998 and moved to USA in 1998 from Ontario.  Continued to pay my student loans for about 14 months (almost $600/month).  Why?  So my Canadian credit would be good and because I believe people should pay back their loans.  Ontario govt decides they gave me too much money and demands payment of $1400.  BUT they sent letter to wrong address and by the time I find out it's in collection.  I call Ont govt in thunder bay and they treat me like dirt.  Call colection agency and they're even worse.  I get angry and stop all payments on the checks I've written to CIBC.  Talk to a canadian accountant and an american accountant, both agree that my USA credit is safe.  Tell collection agency to fly down and file in US courts.  I tell the guy he can even stay at my apartment with me free of charge.  I have never heard from him again.  Now it's 2005 and I want to find out if my file has been closed so I can either forget about it or I want to negotiate a payoff amount.  I will probably never come back to Canada.  I have american wife and 2 american kids but I may want to purchase cnadaian property and will probably be left money and property from my canadian parents.  Do you have advice on how I can finalize this situation?  I am willing to hire a canadian lawyer to help negotiate a payoff.  Can you recommned one?  Any advice?

Call your student loan provide(s) and ask what the status of the debt is. They may tell you the truth or they may lie and say it is still active when it really isn't.

1. A lawyer isn't going to do anything for you in this regard. This is a student loan issue and not a legal battle.

2. From what you are describing, it hardly sounds like you are experiening any financial hardship.

Whatever your intentions are, I wish you the best of luck!
