This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hello
I'm sure this question has been posted but I can't seem to find the answer that I'm looking for.
I defaulted on my OSAP loan in 2006 and am now making payments to HRSDC every month for the past 2 yrs, I pay extra when I can as my job is commission based and I make various amounts each pay check. I have a tax lien when I file. I just got married in July 2011 and am wondering if my husband and I file together if they take his tax refund as well? I'm fine if they take my refund but not his as we are trying to save some money as I will be going on a maternity leave in mid September and money will be very tight.
I have done a great job of paying down my $11000 loan in the last few months and it is now down to less then half.
We have planned to have the whole thing paid off before I go on maternity as I will get some large commissions in the next few months.
My second questions is that because of my frequent payments, would it be possible to remove the lien on my taxes by agreeing to pay a higher amount each mth so that it is paid off faster?
All your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much

1. They dont take the spouses tax refund.... your tax filings are treated as two separate returns... although one may affect the other.
2. Johnny at CFW Group could answer that question... If you have rehabilitated your loan, there is a possiblity that the lien might be removed, but it is usually only done in hardship cases...
