This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

So I talked to the people at Fresh Start in Victoria BC and I get the inpression that if the CRA accepts the offer of 25000 then all I have to do is pay the 25000 in 5 years and the student loan, plus tax people go away?  Is that correct?

I guess the way they play the game is to prove that they would get more from the proposal then if I would declare bankrupcy.  I'm fully willing to do the bankrupcy route but hope the proposal thing works out.

The proposal is bankruptcy. The trustees ALWAYS push consumer proposals because they make HUGE bucks as apposed to the older chapter. I wish you all the luck man. Keep us posted on the outcome. I am routing for you. If you need any insight along the way feel free to ask!

There seems to be some advantages to a proposal and have no problems paying someone to help me out.  The thought of me doing this on my own is... not possible.  There just seems to be to many unknowns and tricks to this game.  I just want to get on with my life.  I hope this works out but my gut says they are just going to try and bury me because that is how this systems seems to be.  Honestly nothing surprises me anymore.

So what happens if they say no?  Do I try again with a higher number?? or does it just go straight to bankrupcy where I don't think they would get much?  What are the real odds of them saying yes in your experience?

You have a very small window of opportunity with CRA and HRSDC concerning compromise. Trustees in bankruptcy are do not specialize in student debt crisis and solutions (other then the hope that bankruptcy will do it).  CFW Group specializes in student debt related matters, but of course, you have to be the one to make the right choices. I can't say whether or not you made the right decision. I don't think you are looking for that answer. You go with your gut and if it turns out wrong, seek further help. It is all you can do.

The bankruptcy industry is traditionally ineffective when it comes to student debt matters. You can find that out easily enough. However, let's hope that your bankruiptcy trustee hits the right notes with the government and illustrates more than just your financial situation. That is all I can say. You have to give them a reason to do it, and you cannot tell them to simply take it or leave it. You do that and it's over. I know how to create and demonstrate to these groups within the government system. It is what I do. If you can force them to see you as a human being then you will be treated as one. It is a case by case issue.

If you need help in the future I will help you patch up any damage that occurs, if any.
