This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

So it's been six years since I've been considered defaulted on my student loans (government and bank loans). I've just recently ordered my credit report and I'm terrified of what I will see. While I know that the information on the credit report can be no more than 6 years old...I can't seem to get my head wrapped around the idea. To me it seems like a get out of jail free card...And can that really be true?

Living under the weight of this debt for 6 years it seems like a fantasy to me that all of a sudden it's no longer on my credit history and I could do things like get a credit card. I've been told for years that there are things I will never be able to have like a credit card, car loan, or a mortgage and that my decision to better my life by attending university would be my cross to bear for the rest of my life.

Does any one know where I can find the statutes on credit reporting in New Brunswick?

While I wait for my credit report the suspense is killing me.

So I got my report.

and you'll never guess what...

Clean as a whistle.

I almost cried when I read it.

3 days later I got a letter from attorney's representing canada student loans wanting a bunch of information about my financial situation. I plan to co-operate...because I still lack the ability to pay.

Are you sure it was really from a lawyer? Or a collection agent masquerading just to get info from you?  Take care.

Also, when you got your credit rating, was it 6 years after your loan defaulted or 6 years after you paid it off?  I want to know because I'm at the 6 year piont myself and am trying to repair my credit too.

it was from a lawyer. I actually replied and managed to get myself in a heck of a mess as a result. If I had just ignored the letter I would be so much better off.

Here's the update on my situation.
In September I got the letter from the Lawyer and replied with my financial information and supporting documentation. I didn't hear anything. In November I wrote them and asked them to suspend the intrest on the loan and reduce the amount owing to the original principal, since I'd had financial hardship since I defaulted and had I gone thru the proper channels I would have qualified for intrest relief and debt reduction. I heard nothing.
In January, just after my son was born, I was served with papers that they were suing me. I called them immediately and asked why they didn't respond to my letters. I spoke to a very nice lady who said if I filled out the financial information forms again and made some payments that they would suspend the action against me for the time being. So I did that and I sent them 3 $100 dollar cheques. I also spoke to my parents about my situation and they agreed to give me the money to pay off this debt providing that it was for the principal only. My father stressed that he would not give me a cent if this debt would not be settled permanently on the value of the principal only. I told the Lawyer this in my letter. In June of this year I recived a reply saying that the government would not accept my settlement proposal because I have too much "future earning potential." I guess that means I also have too much "future poverty and inability to contribute to the economy potential."

Does anyone know who I need to contact at the government to circumvent the Lawyers? My parents will give me the principal but only if it means this debt is cleared up for good. Otherwise I'll be stuck.

In response to the gredit rating question. It was 6 years after my loan defaulted. I've since acquired some credit and I am working on rebuilding my credit score.
