This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

    Posted: 18/June/2012 at 10:27am
Today i received a letter from CBV Collections offering a limited time offer to settle my provincial and federal loans. I have been paying diligently every month since 2006 sometimes to my own detriment. I am not in a financial situation to settle either loans. I am being laid of at the end of July and am now trying to find work. CBV has given a time frame of 15 days to reply from date of letter (JUNE 13) and when i call i am required to fill out a financial questionnaire over the phone, and have all of my financial information at hand. I am curious as to why they have changed their approach. I did obtain the services of John Leblanc over a year ago and have been left alone since then with the exception of a few letters stating that my payment had been received. The letter also states that if i am unable to make a settlement plan "we will work with you to establish a suitable repayment plan that is appropriate to your financial situation". I am just curious if anyone else has received any similar correspondence from CBV and how things are working out for them.

Johnny i am wondering if your rates are still the same.  You intervened on my behalf last year and dealt with CBV Collections for me.  They have not bothered me in over a year until i received their letter on the 18th to contact them and rehash my income , bills etc etc over the phone.  I am thinking of calling them on thursday as this is the date they want to be contacted by. i am being laid off in July and i have not found another job yet i can't make a concrete payment plan with them let alone pay off my loan like they are suggesting  I will be making my regular payment to them  this month but i can't make a deal with them until i find another job to replace this one.  My income is so low already(hours cut) if it were not for my partner i would not be able to make the payments i am making to them now. I found your rates very reasonable and my stress level dropped once i didn't have to deal with them, and just make my payments. :)

Do i need to call them today? I made my payment to them yesterday.  I think they are in Toronto although the address on the letter is Vancouver.  I shouldn't be this stressed about it as i have not missed a payment but i am.  Also wondering why they want to do the income statement over the phone instead of me sending it in as i usually did?

Sorry to keep blathering but i just wanted to say that i ended up calling CBV Collections this morning or else it would have been weighing on my mind and i have a job interview this afternoon.  Totally opposite response then what i expected.  The agent was extremely mellow (not the usual) and i explained my situation and he was like well good luck and i will report your payment.  I am thinking that his demeanor may have had something to do with John Leblanc being involved in my case last year.  Only mention of financial capacity form was when he started to talk about paying out my loan at 80 percent. Although this is  a relief i am sure this is not over and will need Johnny's help when it comes to renegotiating a payment plan in the future.  For those of you who need help get a hold of John Leblanc he really can help you if you can't deal with the collection agencies yourself.  Approve

Well like i said in an earlier post i did contact them, and have just gotten the same letter back again. It is signed by the same agent so who knows perhaps they think harassing us in writing will somehow make us come up with a settlement amount  from the money tree in our back yards.  I usually respond as stressful as it is..if it gets really nasty just check out the posts on this site about how to deal with them i them. I usually re-read them before i make my phone call as it gives me confidence and reinforces the rules and regulations they are to follow when they speak to us. Fortunately this CA seems decent based on my last phone call.  In my case they usually only bother me every six months, and after John intervened for me last year they haven't bothered my in over a year.....up until this past June.  Good luck!
