This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi everyone,

Good news, I just received a response to my email asking that the Liberal Party, or at least my MP consider supporting an interest rate cut on student loans....this was the reply...

Hi Julian,

I forwarded your email to Dr. Fry almost two weeks ago.

She is most certainly in support lowering the interest and debt load of students.

She has forwarded your email to Martha Hall Findley, Bob Rae and Scott Brison, the chairs of the policy committee for the Liberal Party.

It is possible that your policy could become part of the official platform in the next election.

We will know more when the platform is released.

Thank you for your contribution.

Lousy liberals! Why didnt they do this during the 10 or so years when they were in power.

I bet if they get in it wont happen.

The liberals are the group that created this mess in the first place.

All the letter writing we did. All the campaigning. All the letters to the PM's office, all the letters to HRDC. All the complaints filed. And the newspaper articles.
WHAT DID THEY DO? f**k ALL!

Sounds like a nice promise to me--ha,  I'm sure it would be like a bait and switch deal.

Every time a politician says yes to positive changes to the Canada Student Loans Program, it actually gets worse. After all, the CSLP went to hell in a hand basket while the Liberals were in  (coincidence?).

Here is the biggest problem, Pogo. The CSLP is a business that earns the government billions the way it is working right now. Why would they want to change it?

Back to political support ...

Polticians will promise change only if you vote for them, of course. It is possible that your policy will become part of that platform. However, this is a politician and pigs actually can fly if you ask one.

Hey Johnny,

I've worked on several successful political lobbying campaigns; you always have to believe that your cause is just and your time is worth it.  Although you may be right, there are many people out there who simply need a plan to promote before they can see this issue through.  Too often, we've let the CFS talk for us (acting as if all students are only concerned with tuition rates for CURRENT students).

We must stay focused and fight for change!  Be positive!

What you are asking of the system has been approached before on numerous occaisions. Each time it is approached, the system tightens up even worse. Being positive is good, and so is being real. I see the problems from the various fences I stand on. The system is not the problem -  The problem is a human kind, which has rather deep roots if you can catch the drift.

Again, you point fingers at this group and that group. I think it would be more advantageous for you to call out and point your finger at those who are actually responsible for any wrong-doing. Once you have found out who is responsible, lobby to have some accountability put on the table for them to eat.
