This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Has anyone had any dealings with Nova AllianceOne with regards to their student loan(s)?

It seems that my file with CBCL has been passed over to them for some reason. I guess my Homer Simpson routine with the CBCL rep. put her over the edge.

CBCL: Send a cheque to CBCL for $100 on Thursday.
ME: I see .. slight pause .. and who do I send this cheque to?
CBCL: Send it to CBCL
ME: Ok .. slight pause ... and how much should I send?
CBCL: $100
ME: Gotcha .. slight pause .. and when do you want this $100 cheque sent?
CBCL: Thursday
ME: Right .. slight pause .. so this is a cheque or cash?
CBCL: Do you think this is a game ???
ME: No, no, no .... So that's $80 cash by next Wednesday to Bell Canada, right?
CBCL: IT'S A $100 CHEQUE TO CBCL BY THURSDAY OR YOU WILL BE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE !!!
ME: And who do I send the cheque to ??

line goes dead

ME: Hello ... Hello

Ah yes, can't go wrong with Homer Simpson, but I prefer the Stewie from Family Guy approach: It's not that I want you dead, I just don't want you to be alive anymore.

I also find it fun to insist on service in French once in a while (or maybe more often, depending on my mood). Collection agencies are required to provide service in the official language of your choice, so take them up on it sometime. Maybe you should do this only if you have a working knowledge of French. Maybe not.

It's fun if you have a nasty accent like mine. My French is decent, but most people can't get past the accent to listen to what I'm saying. It could be even more fun if you only speak a handful of words, none of which are appropriate for everyday conversation. It's definitely fun if you do it to someone who doesn't speak French, like some of the darlings I've dealt with.

All the addresses the various collection agencies have had for me are in Quebec, so I usually get stuck with French people who have moved to Toronto or the semi-bilingual anglos. It bothers them all, French and English, when I do this.

Go nuts, but keep it polite. See how they respond.
